| Big Win for Glendale |

The Glendale Raptors proved harsh hosts as they crushed the Kansas City Blues at Infinity Park Saturday 64-10. Led by three tries from lock and player of the game Keith Dauper, the Raptors were very quick, and took advantage of a referee that worked hard to ensure quick ball from the rucks. That's exactly what the Raptors wanted, as they spun the ball frequently, kept it alive in contact, and finally saw the type of free-wheeling, attacking game from Tyrone Coppedge fans had been hoping to see. Their only major mistake was a poor clearance kick that rewarded the Blues for some extended pressure and a try. But apart from that, it was all Glendale, which improved to 3-2 in the West-Northern league play. Kansas City dropped dropped to 3-2. "We were quicker to the ball than they were," said Glendale head coach Mark Bullock. "They attack the #1 channel realy well, but we work hard on taking the ball out of the rucks and we were able to do that." Bullock said he challenged his relatively light pack to exert some pressure come scrum-time, and they did, shoving the scrum back on the Blues at the first pack-down, which afforded the Raptors some confidence. They built on that. "We like to keep the ball in play, and perhaps we're guilty of throwing the ball around a bit," said Bullock. "But we learned in [the High Desert Tournament] in Alburquerque that we could put together movements where we hardly have any rucks, but move the ball through the hands. Our forwards run good support lines and they did today." Bullock said he was surprised at how the game went because he expected Kansas City to dominate possession and ram it down the Raptors' throats. However, his speedy pack turned the ball over repeatedly and the backs, Coppedge especially, ran well. "I was expecting a slugfest, so yes I am happy and pleasantly surprised," said Bullock. "We got the win, at home, and got a bonus point, which is important." The West-North league now has three teams at 3-2, but Glendale leads that group with bonus points from every game - one close loss and four games where they have scored four tries or more. |
